Diamond in the Rough

Herkimer “Diamonds” are double-terminated, or double-pointed, quartz crystals that are found in and around Herkimer, New York.

The second most abundant mineral on Earth, quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. Quartz comes in a variety of colors which are caused by the presence of impurities.

Herkimer Quartz are a real stand-out amongst their quartz cousins. These magical little crystals are often called “diamonds” due to both their clarity and natural faceting – these crystals possess double termination points and usually have a total of 18 faces. Their distinct black, grey, and red dappling is a result of liquid, solid and gas inclusions. Herkimer’s rare geometric structures and coloring make them some of the most highly sought-after stones in the quartz world.
